GMLDSL - ADSL Hardware

You will need a connection device to connect to your ADSL account. If you are migrating from an existing ADSL account, you will be able to reuse your existing hardware.

GMLNET accounts are "wires-only" and therefore allow flexibility in choosing the connection hardware.

At the lowest end is an ADSL modem attached by USB. This is the same as is sometimes given away free with ISP accounts and is the bare minimum required, but is not recommended.

An ADSL Router is the most common connection device, these are available with added functionality such as wireless, firewall and such according to situation and taste. For business users we recommend a router and hardware firewall combination for maximum security and reliability. All these hardware options are available from the GML Eshop.

Zyxel VPN capable compact router
£20 (£23.50 inc. VAT)
Zyxel Prestige 660R-61C
Reasons to use a router instead of a modem include -

Stand-alone device
A router does not work via your PC, and hence no chance of your PC "rejecting" the router, as sometimes happens with a modem.

Connection sharing
Any network device can use independently of any machine being on.

Always-on connection
There is no dialup time when using a router.

A Microfilter is also required for connection to a stardard telephone socket, allowing a phone handset to be connected at the same time.

We also recommend an SICD (Secure Internet Connection Device) for maximum security or for VPNs. They are considered essential for business VPN access, for instance for remote workers accessing corporate networks

Both Premium and Budget SICDs are available.
